PRESS RELEASE: The family in a democratic society

BOLD – a civic initiative of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, which aims to increase public support for democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms, organized a panel discussion on:

“The family in a democratic society: Can a child’s rights be in conflict with his or her family’s rights?”

The event will be held in the “House of Sofia” at 12 Midzhur Street on January 31, 2020 from 13:30 to 16:00.

Recently, a discourse on the family and family values has been developing in our country, dominated by conservative-traditionalist attitudes. It is part of a global campaign against liberal-democratic ideas, including human rights and gender equality. Democratic civil society organizations, including human rights organizations, have failed to oppose these movements and are widely perceived by society as a losing country in a worldwide war of cultures. They are even accused of having an interest in separating children from their families and destroying the traditional Bulgarian family in the name of foreign and hostile interests.

But are we really moving towards breaking down what has been achieved in the field of child and family policies? And what awaits us in the future in this complex area? The panel discussion will try to find the answer to these questions by focusing on current sub-topics about the family.

The event is part of BOLD’s inaugural campaign on child and family protection.

To register, please request attendance by January 24, as seats are limited. Write to Vladimir Kolev, BOLD coordinator by e-mail: or call: 02/944 06 70.
